What is WALK?WALK is a wearble mobility aid for those with gait difficulties due to Parkinson's Disease. It reduces the chance of falling and improves movement while walking.
-
What does WALK look like?WALK is a fabric band that is worn on the lower thigh. It wraps around the leg and is held in place by hook and loop fastners (also sometimes known as Velcro). WALK may be worn on the thigh under regular attire, or over trousers as well. The band is sleek and will not show on the outside.
-
Who can use WALK?WALK was primarily designed for individuals with Parkinson's Disease having gait difficulties such as freezing of gait, bradykinesia. For other conditions, please get in touch with us
-
How does WALK work? What is the science behind it?WALK uses the scientific principle of neuromodulation through muscle stimulation. WALK targets "spinal excitability". WALK stimulates muscles to modulate excitability and reduce walking related symptoms in Parkinson's Disease. Generally, walking is an automatic activity. One does not usually think about the act of walking while doing so. This is because the spinal cord manages a significant part of the coordination. In Parkinson's, the communication between the brain and spinal cord is abnormal, which causes ymptoms such as slow movement (bradykinesia), no movement (akinesia) and freezing of gait which can cause unsteadiness and may lead to falls. A basic analogy is something like this: A non-Parkinson's brain sends one unit of current to the spinal cord, which activates it and then the spinal cord manages walking on it's own. In Parkinson's, that one unit reduces to half a unit because cells in a part of the brain called the Basal Ganglia are lost. Through muscle stimulation, we modulate spinal excitability and enable the spinal cord to better cope with this reduced supply from the brain. The action of walking can be activated even with reduced communication from the brain by modulating spinal excitability

Is WALK visible or audible from the outside? No. WALK is designed to be discreet. Only the wearer will perceive the cueing. You can safely wear WALK indoors or outdoors without worrying about disturbance or attracting undue attention.
-
Who should be cautious when using WALK?Individuals with neurological diseases apart from Parkinson's or those with non-gait co-mobidities that make them prone to excessive falls should only use WALK under supervision and after consulting their physician.
